goodwood : festival of speed : 2024

I’ve got a love-hate relationship with the Festival of Speed. On one hand, there’s nothing quite like the smell of burning rubber from an insanely expensive and appropriately overpowered machine on some Duke’s fancy driveway. On the other, how is 4 days still not enough to see everything?!

4 days of automotive mania

Easily the most memorable moment from this year came from the F1 batch just before midday Sunday. I had already written off my chances of getting a tabard in the morning, what with Max Verstappen’s first appearance at the event scheduled for around 11:40, but low and behold there were a small handful available. My first thought when I grasped mine was “…Shit, I better make the most of this!”.

I hadn’t shot a lot of hill stuff by that point, so I decided to go up to the far side of the flint wall and make my way back down. Got a few OK shots in, and by the time I arrived opposite the Goodwood house it was nearly time for the F1 cars to do their run. There weren’t any client cars in this run, so I figured I could have a bit of fun and try some slow shutter shots - if they all came out rubbish it didn’t matter. Set the shutter to 1/40, focus continuous, aperture f18, and then winged it. Frederik Vesti did too, apparently.
